Weekly Chomp 06/21
To Long Don’t Read (TLDR): Our team raced their hearts out this past week!! The Swimmers of the Week are Roxy Witenstein and Patrick LeBoon. Make sure to wear a CCH cap at swim meets! And Monday is picture day at 7:15 AM!!
The theme of this week is perseverance! This past week, we had a very close meet against Hollin Meadows. They were supposed to win by a large margin and we cut that lead down to only 8 points! We swam extremely well and everyone rose to the occasion and battled extremely hard. Of course, there are mistakes and skills we can work on… legal relay starts… but I loved the energy and excitement of the swimmers and the team! I am very excited for the meet tomorrow!!
Swimmer of the Week:
Roxy Witenstein
Roxy is a determined and respectful swimmer. She is consistently at practice and is always in the water on time. Roxy was chosen this week for several reasons but especially the discipline and effort she shows every day in practice. These attributes help set an example for those around her and are one of her strongest leadership qualities. Keep working hard, Roxy!!!
Patrick LeBoon
Patrick is an energetic and playful swimmer. At meets, he can be found cheering and yelling for his teammates. Patrick was one of our Swimmers of the Week this week because of his can-do attitude and outstanding effort. When it comes to swimming fast, Patrick will listen to his coach’s advice and has the discipline to quickly translate that advice into action. Always stay supportive, Patrick!!!
Other Standout Swims:
Sebastian Nelson and Frankie Sereno: Both boys had great swims in their 50 breaststrokes. What made their swims especially impressive was that both of their goggles fell off on the dive! Instead of giving up, they persevered and pushed through. Thank you for grinding through, Sebastian and Frankie!
Kylie Martin: Kylie had an awesome meet on Saturday. While her Individual 50 Butterfly did not go exactly as she would have liked, she did not let that bother her, and delivered a blazing fast and much needed 25 butterfly relay leg. She played an important role in beating the other team! Way to keep your composure, Kylie!
Violet Lanphere: While Violet is not the most smile-ly swimmer I have ever coached, I know she loves swimming because she keeps coming back everyday and is always listening and following advice from the coaches. Those great listening ears and strong work ethic paid off this Monday when she had two monster swims in the 25 back and free! Thank you for always paying attention, Violet!!
Zander Manguikian: Zander is well known on the team for his can-do attitude, fierce competitive edge, and his love of swimming. He had an amazing 25 fly race, where he dropped time, but ended up coming in second. I am very proud of Zander for quickly bouncing back and crushing it in the relay and on his 100 IM! Always stay resilient, Zander!!!
At Home “Workout”
One of the hardest components of breaststroke is learning how to do the kick. And one of the hardest parts about learning the kick is learning how to do an eversion dorsiflexion. (I must admit I had no idea the names of the motion until I Searched it on Google) I have attached some images below to help! Essentially I want them to learn to pull their toes up towards their face (dorsiflexion) while turning their toes outwards towards their sides (eversion). This sets up their feet in the right position so they can catch the water with the sole of their foot rather than the top of it.
A fun at home exercise is practicing this foot motion. If they are sitting around watching TV or playing a game you can have them practice flexing, pointing, and relaxing their feet! I would advise them not to do more than 50 of these flexions otherwise they might get a shin cramp.
Cheers,
Coach Jason, Ben, Emma, and Ashley
